Butterfield Trail is Tom Fazio's public course in El Paso, opened in June 2007 on 175 acres of El Paso International Airport land. It's high-desert golf built around natural sand dunes and native plants, with more than 55 feet of elevation change. Most of the greens are raised, there are knolls and a few blind shots, and the bunkering runs into big waste areas. Some stretches feel like links golf and others are desert target golf, and the two nines loop around two large lakes. The map survey counts about 80 bunkers and water on 3 holes. It's a par 72 of 7,307 yards from the back, with bentgrass greens and a season that runs all year. The par 3s get the attention: Golf Daily picks out the 10th, with dunes and bunkers left of the green, and the 17th, which plays 233 yards from an elevated tee where you can see most of the course.

The name comes from the Butterfield Overland Mail, the stage line that carried mail and passengers from Missouri to San Francisco. Every hole is named for a stop on the route, and part of the original trail crosses the property.

The posted rates (no year given, read September 2026) are $39.95 plus tax for 18 before noon on weekdays and $49.95 on weekends, with cheaper mid-day, afternoon and twilight rates and a senior and military rate.
