About Brainerd Golf Course
Brainerd is one of the City of Chattanooga's oldest courses, a Donald Ross design on rolling ground with mature trees, tucked right up against the airport. It opened in 1926 and has always been city-owned. Renovations in 1953 and 1983 changed a lot, including flipping the nines from Ross's routing, but the Lying Four blog's comparison with Ross's blueprints found most of the changes were at the edges of the property.
The greens are where the Ross is. Writers single out the raised, tiered green at the 5th, which is close to what Ross drew, and the wave-like 9th. The par-4 7th has its green up on a ridge above the fairway, with a rocky drop to the right that Ross's plans called a gravel pit. Expect slopes big enough to make you think about where you leave approach shots.
It's a neighborhood course at heart, with a snack bar and pro shop in the clubhouse. Ross's original blueprints still exist, and the full footprint he laid out is still there.
