The Course at Sewanee

A bishop laid it out in 1915 with mules and the football team; Gil Hanse rebuilt it in 2013 so you can go round twice with different yardages and pars.

About The Course at Sewanee

This is the University of the South's course, on campus up on the Cumberland Plateau. It's nine holes, but it doesn't play like a quick nine. Alternate tees mean you can go around twice as two different loops, with the yardages and even some pars changing on the second time through.

The story starts in 1915. Bishop Albion W. Knight laid out the first nine with no design training, a team of mules and the university's football team. Nearly a century later, a group of Sewanee graduates raised a reported $3.5 million and hired Gil Hanse, Golf Magazine's 2009 Architect of the Year. With Jim Wagner he kept Knight's routing and rebuilt nearly everything else: all nine green complexes, the bunkers and new alternate tees, and trees came out. It reopened in 2013 after two years of work, and a full bunker renovation followed in 2026.

People who aren't members can play it. Golfweek's 2026 Best Courses You Can Play list ranked it the No. 2 public-access course in Tennessee. The Green's View Grill is at the clubhouse.
