About Bear Trace at Harrison Bay
The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay is the Jack Nicklaus course in Harrison Bay State Park, about 20 minutes north of Chattanooga, and the second of the Bear Trace courses to open on the state's Tennessee Golf Trail. It's on Chickamauga Lake and wrapped in pine and hardwood forest, and many holes run down toward the lake or its sloughs.
Water touches 12 fairways, but the state is right that there's room to play safe: only the par-3 14th makes you carry it, about 175 yards over a finger of the slough. Most greens are open in front, so you can run the ball on, and the fairway and greenside bunkers are classic Nicklaus. Nicklaus stretched the routing to put the closing green beside Hide Out Slough instead of up by the clubhouse, and it's a good finish for it.
It's a par 72 on 419 Bermuda fairways and Champion Bermuda greens, with four sets of tees: 7,111 yards from the golds (74.9/136), 6,545 from the blues, 5,972 from the whites and 5,292 from the reds. There's a range, practice green, snack bar, club rental and lessons.
