About Spearfish Canyon Golf Club
Spearfish Canyon Golf Club dates to 1921, when the club was founded and its first nine opened soon after, which makes it one of the oldest courses in South Dakota. In 1988 it became the first 18-hole course in the Northern Black Hills. It's a club with member events, but it welcomes daily-fee golfers.
The two nines don't look alike. The Canyon Nine is the original: 3,224 yards, par 36 with three each of par 3s, 4s and 5s, tree-lined and tucked into Ponderosa pine, oak and Black Hills spruce. The Lookout Nine, added in 1988, is a 3,529-yard links-style nine with rolling hills, big greens and an oak-lined creek bed. Phelps Atkinson Golf Course Design drew a master plan in 2018; the reworked holes, a new range and a short-game area opened June 20, 2020. That's when the nines got their names, and the routing flipped so most rounds start on Lookout and finish on the Canyon holes, which the club calls its most scenic.
