Willard Byrd cut this par 72 through Carolina woods, and the ground does most of the talking: hills, mountain-like brooks, and pines along the edges. The greens are Mini-Verde Bermuda. Much of what isn't in play has been let go to tall native grass and plants, which the course says cuts water, pesticide and fertilizer use and gives it a look you might not expect the first time. You might see a rafter of wild turkeys or hawks over the pines. Its longtime superintendent, Adam Charles, won the 2011 Environmental Leaders in Golf Award, Resort Division, from the GCSAA and Golf Digest.

Every hole has a name on a cedar post with a carved brass sign: Genesis, Sitting Duck, Crooked Creek, Hawk's Ridge, Rafter, Sulphur Springs, and on through The Road Hole, Whispering Pines, Trestle, Byrd's Eye View and Fowl Play. The course uses hybrid tee combinations (set up in 2022), from Black/Blue at 72.7 and 138 slope down to Gold/Red at 65.9 and 123, so ask the shop where the tees are before you go out.

As Verdae Greens, it hosted the tour's Greater Greenville Classic from 1992 to 2000, nine years in all; the event is now the BMW Charity Pro-Am. It sits next to the Embassy Suites Greenville Golf Resort, with a grass range when conditions allow, a chipping green and PGA instruction.

It's one of 27 courses Yoink watches in the Greenville & the Upstate area, and the closest alternative is Furman University Golf Club, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.

Booking a tee time at The Preserve at Verdae Golf Club

Book public tee times online. The 2026 rates include a cart: $65 plus tax for 18 Monday to Thursday and $75 Friday to Sunday, with seniors 60 and over at $45 on weekdays. Mid-day rates run 1 to 3:50 p.m. and twilight starts around 4 p.m. You can only walk after 3 p.m., for $30. Juniors with a paying adult play 18 for $20.
