About Furman University Golf Club

Furman's course is the university's par 72, open to the public and home to the Paladins' men's and women's teams. Richard Webel drew it with Walter Cosby, the greens superintendent at the Greenbrier, and it went in in two phases in the late 1950s over rolling ground.

The history is the golf team. In 1976 Beth Daniel and Betsy King led Furman to the national women's title, beating a Tulsa team led by Nancy Lopez, and Dottie Pepper and Brad Faxon played their college golf here too. The clubhouse Wall of Fame has photos of 18 All-Americans and 17 tour players. In 2016 Golfweek put it 17th on its Best Campus Courses list.

The club dates its big renovation to 2008, when all 18 greens were rebuilt to USGA spec and grassed with Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda. Architect Kris Spence did the greens and surrounds, giving them a Donald Ross look with raised pads and bunkers cut tight into steep grass faces, and he added a dozen fairway bunkers and new tees on five holes. A master plan since 2010 has brought a new team practice area, more tees, bunker changes and drainage.
