About Wild Dunes Resort - Links Course
The Links is where Tom Fazio started. It opened in early 1980 as his first solo design, when he was a relative unknown, and he's said the dune ground on holes 10 through 13 has the kind of elevation change you don't usually find in the Lowcountry. Palms and oaks frame the fairways, and the last stretch runs along the Atlantic, so the wind off the ocean decides a lot of how it plays at the end.
The par-3 12th is the one people remember, a partly blind shot over native dunes. The 18th has the best story. It used to be a 501-yard dogleg-right par 5 on the beach. Hurricane Hugo wrecked the course in 1989, tides took four acres of the 18th in 2007, and by 2013 it was eroded and unsafe, so it's now a par 3 of about 185 yards with a big waste area and bunkers.
Fazio Design, led by Logan Fazio with Bryan Bowers, reworked the whole course and it reopened in October 2015. They added length on 11 holes, rebuilt the greens with ultra-dwarf Bermuda and grew the putting surfaces from 72,000 to 105,000 square feet after years of mowing had shrunk them. It came out a par 70, about 200 yards shorter than the original 6,709-yard par 72. The map survey counts 72 bunkers and water on four holes.
