Charleston National Golf Club

Rees Jones carved it along the Intracoastal through wetlands, pines and oaks. Wooden bridges cross the marsh, and the finishing holes run beside it.

About Charleston National Golf Club

Charleston National is a Rees Jones course in suburban Mount Pleasant, just north of Charleston, and it's the only Jones design in the area the public can play. It runs along the Intracoastal Waterway, through wetlands, lagoons and a pine and oak forest, with wooden bridges carrying you over the natural areas from tee to green. The finishing holes sit alongside acres of marsh.

It's a par 72 with five sets of tees. Pick the right ones: the head pro told Discover South Carolina it plays like target golf, because you have to be accurate around the marsh. The 2nd is a short par 3 over marsh (155 yards at most), and the par-4 15th makes you carry marsh twice.

It was meant to be something else. The club says Charleston National was first planned as an exclusive private club along the lines of Augusta National. Discover South Carolina says Jones came in 1989 after Hurricane Hugo tore through the area, and that the course went through several design and ownership changes before his company came back to rebuild it. Today it's semi-private and open to the public year round, with an all-grass practice facility near the first tee.

It's one of 22 courses Yoink watches in the Charleston area, and the closest alternative is Wild Dunes Resort - The Harbor Course, about 6 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
