Rhode Island Golf Courses & Tee Times

Rhode Island sits near the start of American golf. Newport Country Club, a private club founded in 1893, hosted the first U.S. Amateur and the first U.S. Open in 1895, then the 1995 U.S. Amateur that Tiger Woods won and the 2006 U.S. Women's Open. The Rhode Island Golf Association followed in 1902 and now counts 49 member clubs. On the public side the anchor is Triggs Memorial in Providence, a 1932 Donald Ross design. Two 9-hole courses opened in 2024, South Shore Village in South Kingstown and Met Links on the old Metacomet grounds in East Providence. RIGA calls South Shore Village the state's first brand-new course in nearly 25 years.

Who runs public golf in Rhode Island

The state doesn't run much golf. Rhode Island's parks department runs one 9-hole, par-36 course at Goddard State Park in Warwick. Providence owns Triggs Memorial and leases it to FCG Associates, which took over in 1990 and restored the course toward Ross's original plans. The Rhode Island Golf Association, merged with the Rhode Island Women's Golf Association in 2013, runs the state championships, conducts USGA local qualifying and handles course rating and handicaps. Its home is Button Hole in Providence, a learning center built on a former gravel pit that turns 25 on August 4, 2026.

Getting a tee time in Rhode Island

The season in Rhode Island runs roughly from spring to late fall. The first warm weekends in spring and the cool, dry weekends of fall are the hardest to book.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

Booked-up doesn't mean gone. Plans change: groups cancel ahead of the course's cancellation deadline (often 24 to 48 hours out), players drop when the forecast turns, and a group that shrinks leaves an open spot. Those times quietly come back on the booking page, usually for minutes, not hours.
