Toftrees Golf Club

Ed Ault's pine-hills resort course from the Penn State boom of 1968, with a 634-yard downhill 8th and a closing dogleg that punishes a slice.

About Toftrees Golf Club

Toftrees started in 1968, when investors Phil Sieg and Alex Gregory Sr. bet on growth around Penn State and began building a few miles west of campus. They named it for a Bavarian term meaning home amongst the trees, and the course runs through white pine hills. It opened with nine holes, and Edmund Ault's full 18 was done by the end of 1971, alongside a hotel and conference center. Marriott Golf ran it from 1990 through 1999, and a local partnership has owned it since.

It's a par 72 of more than 7,000 yards from the back, and it moves: the 5th climbs a steep fairway to an elevated green, and the 8th is 634 yards downhill, with rough splitting the fairway about 300 yards out, a stream left and trees right. The 10th has nothing to stop the wind, and the finish is tough if you slice it. There's out of bounds down the entire right side of the 17th, and the 18th turns left with big bunkers waiting on the right.

The course has hosted the PA Golf Association Better-Ball Championship. There's a range, a short-game area and a putting green, a patio over the course, and The Field for food after.

It's one of 2 courses in State College on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Penn State Golf Courses, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
