Sinking Valley Country Club

Opened as a nine in 1963 and grown to 18 by 1967, it winds through mature hardwoods to bent grass greens and plays 6,997 yards from the blues.

About Sinking Valley Country Club

Sinking Valley sits on Golf Course Road outside Altoona, cut through stands of mature hardwood in the hills. The club's own line is that a round here could be confused with a stroll through a nature preserve. The greens are bent grass and the fairways are plush, and from the blue tees it stretches to 6,997 yards with a 130 slope. The whites play 6,474 at the same slope, and the gold and red tees come in at 5,372 and 5,029.

It's a product of the 1960s golf boom around Altoona. The Altoona Mirror's history of the era records Sinking Valley opening as a nine-hole course in July 1963, with Ed DelBaggio as its first head pro, and expanding to 18 in April 1967, when club superintendent George Ord oversaw construction of the new nine.

Despite the country club name, you don't need a membership to play. There's a pro shop, a bent grass putting green, a practice area with room for chipping and pitching plus a practice bunker, and a grille for after the round.
