About Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort
Shawnee is golf on an island in the Delaware River, and the resort calls it the only island course in the region. A.W. Tillinghast laid out the original 18 for the Buckwood Inn, which opened in 1911, and it was his first design. Bill Diddle added a third nine in 1964, so today it's 27 holes you play in 18-hole pairs. You ride: resort carts are required and personal carts aren't allowed.
The history runs deep. At the 1913 Shawnee Open, a letter from owner Worthington urging the pros to organize is credited with planting the idea of a professional association. The 1938 PGA Championship came here, and Paul Runyan beat the resident pro, Sam Snead, 8 and 7 in the final. Bandleader Fred Waring bought the place in 1943, renamed it the Shawnee Inn and broadcast his radio shows from the Playhouse. Arnold Palmer met his wife Winnie here in 1954, when she worked at the clubhouse.
For practice there's a 250-yard range (leave the woods in the bag) and a six-hole par-3 Chip n' Putt designed by Tom Doak. The halfway house is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
