About Juniata Golf Course
Juniata is a Fairmount Park course, in Tacony Creek Park in North Philadelphia. Local golfers fought for five years to get the city into public golf, and in December 1923 the park commissioners picked a 66-acre tract along Tacony Creek running to Juniata Park. Outgoing Mayor Kendrick called the first steps the commission's top business achievement of the year.
Alan D. Corson, the park's chief engineer, laid it out on those 66 acres plus 40 more from the creek park. He said in 1925 that a public course should be easy to get around, so he made it less difficult than Cobbs Creek, because an easy course lets more people play. The first nine opened on July 14, 1927, and all 18 were open by Memorial Day 1930.
It's still a neighborhood course, and the clubhouse hosts outings, banquets and weddings.
