About White Deer Golf Course
White Deer is a 36-hole public complex in Montgomery, on the southern edge of Lycoming County, and the two courses play differently. The Vintage, which locals call the Old Course, opened in the spring of 1965. Back then it ran 6,790 yards and, the club says, had the three hardest opening holes in Pennsylvania. It was redesigned in the late 1980s to make room for the second course, a new range and cart barns, and it now plays about 6,400 yards from the back. There's still water on seven holes, 69 bunkers and plenty of tree-lined fairways.
The Heritage, the New Course, is Lindsay Ervin's design from the summer of 1990: par 72, 6,587 yards from the tips, four sets of tees. It's cut through dense woods, with 74 bunkers, water on 11 holes and out of bounds in a lot of places. The club warns that the easy opener gives false hope. It's tight, so leave the driver in the bag when you need to. The course itself calls the Heritage slightly harder of the two.
Off the course there's a range, a putting green, a bar and restaurant, and free footgolf and disc golf. There are no lessons or clinics right now, and the carts don't have GPS.
