About Bucknell Golf Club

This is Bucknell University's course and the home of its men's and women's golf teams, a semi-private club that sells public tee times. It started when the trustees agreed in December 1929 to pay for a farm for a golf course. Emil Loeffler designed the original nine, his brother Archie built it for $15,000, and it opened at Homecoming on October 31, 1930. Ernie Graner, class of '33, won the opening-day medal event with an 88.

The layout has changed in stages. In 1947 the club took the dogleg out of the old 3rd, which used to bend around a barn, and built the par 3 that is now 16. In 1964 the university added the Herman farm west of Smoketown Road, and Edward Ault turned it into 18, adding the big pond at 12 and 13. The five holes across the road sit on red shale that wouldn't hold grass, so fairway irrigation and the pond in front of 9 followed in 1967. The club counts 3, 13 and 16 as its best-looking holes.

Dave Marr, the 1965 PGA champion, gave a clinic and exhibition for the 50th anniversary in 1979, and the club says it has hosted several U.S. Open qualifiers in the past 15 years. There's a practice range that opened in 1988, two putting greens and the 1846 Grill.
