About Tyoga Golf Course
Tyoga is a hill course two miles from the center of Wellsboro, in the rolling country the area sells as Grand Canyon Country. Edmund Ault's layout follows the natural ground, so you get views, severe sidehill lies on holes like the 4th, and wind that's usually blowing on the short 13th. It's public, with no membership needed, and there's a full restaurant and bar at the turn.
The par 3s do the damage. The course calls the long 8th arguably its hardest hole, and the 10th goes straight up the hill with a long iron or hybrid into a sloped, fast green. The 16th is the one the staff call the most scenic, and the 18th is a long, narrow par 4 with out of bounds on both sides and a two-tiered green.
It started as Tyoga Country Club. An English greenskeeper named Walter Sowry was hired to build the course in the spring of 1923, and the club formally opened on June 28, 1923, with 225 members and guests at supper; rain washed out the planned golf. It stayed nine holes until 1979, when it was expanded to 18 to Edmund Ault's design, and it now goes by Tyoga Golf Course. In GolfPass's 2026 Golfers' Choice lists, based on 2025 golfer reviews, it ranked first for value among U.S. public courses and seventh on the 2026 Top 50 public courses list.
