Penn National Golf Club

Two courses on old iron-mining land: Ed Ault's tree-lined Founders (1968) and Bill Love's nearly treeless Iron Forge, with an 1800s lime kiln by the 9th.

About Penn National Golf Club

Penn National has two courses that play nothing alike. Founders, laid out by Edmund Ault starting in 1966 and opened June 1, 1968 (the first round cost $2.50), is a traditional Northeastern layout with large contoured greens and trees lining most holes. Nothing is blind; it's all in front of you, but it asks for straight driving. A 7-acre lake comes into play on both nines, and the club says the hardest golf is the five-hole finish starting at the par-5 14th. It got a full bunker and tee renovation in 2006.

Iron Forge, by Bill Love, opened in 1997 and is close to treeless. It heads out toward Michaux State Forest in the foothills of South Mountain and loops home, with views across 30 miles of farmland and mountains. You can swing hard off the tee; the work is on and around the greens, and from the 4th through the 11th the course warns about the 'Mountain Effect': whatever your eyes tell you, the mountain controls the speed and break.

The land has a past. Iron ore was mined here in the 1800s, then it was farmed until the 1960s. While Iron Forge was being built, crews uncovered a small lime kiln from the early 1800s. It's preserved behind the 9th green, and you're welcome to stop and look.
