About Dauphin Highlands Golf Course
Dauphin Highlands is Dauphin County's public course. The county's General Authority bought about 231 acres from Bethlehem Steel in 1993, land the steel company's executives had used for years for recreation and entertainment, and built a modern public course on it, straddling Steelton and Swatara Township with a Harrisburg address. Indigo Sports, a Troon company, runs it day to day.
Expect a workout. The course describes significant elevation changes and hilly terrain, with tough par 3s and par 5s, from a 172-yard par 3 up to a wide-open 541-yard par 5. The hole people talk about is the 17th, a par 3 where you tee off over a natural ravine to a gently sloping green. The map survey counts about 67 bunkers but water on only three holes. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
It's a tournament course, too: the American Junior Golf Association has held events here, and it hosts up to 50 outings a year. The Authority recently put in a new irrigation system for the fairways and greens. There's a grass range, a putting green, GPS carts and the Five Iron Grille.
It's one of 26 courses Yoink watches in the Harrisburg & Central PA area, and the closest alternative is Riverview Golf Course, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
