Laurel Hill Golf Course

Harvey Granger's 1977 par 31 under giant oaks, firs and pines: the par 4s bend around trees, and a creek ravine guards the 2nd and 3rd.

About Laurel Hill Golf Course

Laurel Hill is a nine-hole, par-31 course off I-5 at Exit 40, between Grants Pass and Medford: five par 3s and four par 4s, 1,915 yards in all. Don't mistake short for easy. The course likes to say it's a regulation course with the drives taken out. The par 4s run 275 to 300 yards, but they're tree-lined doglegs, so you play two irons in. As far as the course knows, nobody has ever driven one.

The trouble is real. A creek in a steep ravine full of blackberries runs down the left of the 2nd and 3rd, the 5th and 6th have small greens (the 6th slopes), and the 9th has a pond in the dogleg that makes the layup count. The giant oaks, firs and pines shade most of it, which helps in a Rogue Valley summer.

Harvey Granger (1909-1997) built it. He'd farmed in Fremont, California, for thirty years, and he and his brother had already built a small nine-hole public course there. He bought part of the Chavner Thompson property here, and with an architect and some friends the course came together from 1975 to 1977, opening August 6, 1977, with a rustic clubhouse. The range came later, and there's disc golf now too.
