Lake Hefner Golf Course

Two 18s by the lake: Randy Heckenkemper rebuilt Perry Maxwell's North in 1994 around long par 4s, and Floyd Farley's shorter South dates to 1965.

About Lake Hefner Golf Course

Lake Hefner is the city's 36-hole club on the lake of the same name, with two 18s, a three-hole academy course, a range and simulators. The North is the one people drive across town for. Perry Maxwell built the original, reputedly his last in Oklahoma, but with tiny greens and no irrigation it had to be rebuilt nearly from scratch, and Oklahoman Randy Heckenkemper did that in 1994.

Heckenkemper's North is a par 72 of 6,970 yards from the back, rated 73.8 with a 127 slope, and he built it around the par 4s: seven of them are 406 yards or longer, and the 454-yard 12th is the hardest hole. Heckenkemper's own warning: with the wind off the lake, you'd better have your A game. Golf Digest ranked the North the fourth Best Public Course in Oklahoma in 1996.

The South is Floyd Farley's 1965 design, 6,305 yards and par 70, the shorter of the two. Upstairs in the clubhouse, Maxwell's on the Lake is named for the original architect, and the grab-and-go counter downstairs honors Alsie "Poppie" Hyden, who gave the club 57 years.
