Oklahoma Golf Courses & Tee Times

Golf in Oklahoma goes back to May 1900, when it was first played at Guthrie Country Club in the territorial capital. The state's biggest name in design is Perry Maxwell, an Ardmore banker who built Dornick Hills in 1913, laid out Southern Hills in Tulsa in the 1930s and later oversaw work at Augusta National. Southern Hills is private, but it has held three U.S. Opens and five PGAs, more PGAs than any other course. The Oklahoma Open has been played since 1910, and Oklahoma State has one of the strongest college golf programs in the country.

Who runs public golf in Oklahoma

Public golf here is mostly city, county and state park golf. Oklahoma City runs five municipal courses with no membership needed, and Youth on Course members play them free Monday through Thursday and after noon on weekends. Tulsa's city courses, Page Belcher and Mohawk Park, are run by a management company, and Tulsa County's LaFortune Park opened in 1960 as the state's first county park. The state parks have golf too: TravelOK lists courses at Grand Lake (Grand Cherokee), Sequoyah, Roman Nose, Lake Murray, Arrowhead on Lake Eufaula, Beavers Bend (Cedar Creek) and Fort Cobb. The Oklahoma Golf Association, founded in 1910, has nearly 110 member clubs and more than 22,000 members, runs handicaps and course rating, and runs the OGA championships and the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour.

Getting a tee time in Oklahoma

Spring and fall are peak season in Oklahoma. In summer the heat pushes everyone toward early morning, so the first few hours of the day fill before anything else.

Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
