Blacklick Woods Metro Park

Jack Kidwell rebuilt the old Stoney Creek club course for Metro Parks in 1973 and kept 13 of its holes. Tree-lined, with a lake bridge to the 9th green.

About Blacklick Woods Metro Park

This was a private club first. Stoney Creek Country Club sat in the middle of Blacklick Woods, the first Metro Park, and when the club thought about cutting to nine holes and selling land for houses, the park board bought the whole thing in 1967. Metro Parks ran it as a public course, and in 1973 it reopened as Blacklick Woods Golf Courses, with Columbus architect Jack Kidwell's redesign. He kept 13 of the old holes and pushed the Championship Course north to almost 7,000 yards.

It plays like a traditional parkland course, with tree-lined fairways and good greens, and it runs through a 643-acre park that includes a state nature preserve. You cross a lake on a bridge on the walk to the 9th green. Kinney Golf Course Design rebuilt greens, tees and bunkers in 1995, and in 2005 it became a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the fourth fully certified course in Ohio.

It has a good record with judges. The Ohio Parks and Recreation Association gave it its Outstanding Facility Award in 1974, and the Columbus Dispatch made the Championship Course a CBUS Top Pick for public golf in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Next door, the nine-hole Learning Course (two par 4s and seven par 3s, four sets of tees) replaced the old Executive Course in 2011. Practice is covered too: a full range, a 30,000-square-foot putting green with three bunkers, and a three-hole practice course.
