Genesee Valley Golf Course

The Old Course dates to 1899, laid over an Olmsted park meadow by the Genesee River. A shorter, friendlier New Course next door makes it 36 holes.

About Genesee Valley Golf Course

Genesee Valley sits in the Rochester park Frederick Law Olmsted laid out, originally called South Park, along the Genesee River. Olmsted's plan had a pastoral meadow there, and under John Charles Olmsted a golf course took its place. The county dates the North Course, the 'Old Course,' to 1899 and calls it one of the oldest golf clubs in America. Soon after came the South, or 'New Course,' for 36 holes in all.

The North is the main event: par 71, 6,444 yards from the blues on the 2023 card (70.6 rating, 118 slope), 5,537 from the golds. The South is the shorter, friendlier one at par 67 and 5,230 yards, but its small target greens and some demanding tee shots keep it honest. The scorecard reminds you to take care crossing busy roads between holes, so keep your head up in the cart.

Monroe County Parks runs it, and it's one of only two county courses with a driving range (Durand Eastman has none): an all-grass range, a big putting green and a chipping green. The courses usually close for the winter sometime in November.

It's one of 3 courses in Rochester on Yoink, and the closest alternative is The Links at Woodcliff, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
