About Durand Eastman Golf Course

Durand Eastman is Monroe County's hill course, inside the park George Eastman and Dr. Henry Durand gave the city on Lake Ontario in 1907. The course calls it an undulating landscape with big tree-lined fairways, creeks and ponds. The club's own history puts it better: the fairways are fairly flat and sit in valleys, and most of the climbing comes on the walk from green to next tee. A 1940 newspaper said it was often called the mountain goat course. Nearly every tree along those fairways was planted on purpose over the years.

It's short by modern standards, 5,198 to 6,033 yards, and par 70 from the blue, white and gold tees (72 from the red). Carry your bag only if your legs are ready for the hills. The county's pace rule is 4 hours and 20 minutes for 18.

The history runs deep. There was a nine-hole course here by 1917, the third public course in Rochester, and a 1940 Times Union clipping credited Donald Ross with that first nine, though the club says that's never been confirmed. A second nine followed in 1931. Then in 1933-34 Robert Trent Jones, a young Cornell-trained architect born in East Rochester, rebuilt the whole thing and pushed seven holes across Kings Highway; that course went into service in 1935. Golf Digest listed it among the country's outstanding municipal layouts in March 1976, next to Rancho Park and Torrey Pines. In 2016 the county switched the nines back to Jones's 1934 order.
