About Capital Hills at Albany
Capital Hills is Albany's municipal course, a par 70 that Devereux Emmet designed on 265 acres of farmland the city bought from the Walley family in 1930. The front nine is the gentler half, opening with a 513-yard par 5 that's the one front-nine hole left from the original course, then water on the short par-4 5th and the 6th.
In 1949 the city dropped the first two original holes, squeezed another par 3 into the back, and moved all the hilly holes to the inward nine, cutting par from 72 to 70. The course calls the 17th its signature hole: 406 yards, doglegging right up to an elevated green, and par there is a good score.
Mayor John Boyd Thatcher pushed for city golf in 1929, and while the real course was being built the city ran a free temporary nine that drew over 1,500 players in the summer of 1930. Thatcher dedicated Albany Municipal Golf Course on May 28, 1932; the price was $70,402.40. Its early-1960s junior program turned out many of the area's best amateurs. After a renovation it reopened on July 13, 1991 as the New Course at Albany, and a public naming contest later gave it the Capital Hills name. It began hosting the Fuccillo Kia Classic of NY, a Symetra Tour (Road to the LPGA) event, in 2004. There's a 1-acre grass range tee, short-game areas and Martels bar and grill.
