About Schenectady Municipal Golf Course
Muni, as locals call it, is the City of Schenectady's course: about 6,600 yards of tight fairways lined with grass and native plants, and greens that are fast and roll up and down. Several front-nine holes play from elevated tees, and water comes into play at 16 and 17. Bob Haggerty Jr., the pro here from 1967 to 2004, named 10, 11 and 12 Amen Corner North, and the par-5 14th is called The Monster, the longest hole on the course.
It's a New Deal course. Construction started in late 1933 with money from FERA, the CWA and New York's TERA, and to put as many people to work as possible they used men instead of machines, with horses and wheelbarrows doing what tractors would have. Nearly 1,400 people worked on it through a snowy winter. It opened on July 15, 1935, and Mayor Henry Fagal called it a monument to the darkest days we have ever seen. Arthur F. Knight, a GE electrical engineer who invented the Schenectady Putter, designed it with the pro from Mohawk Golf Club. Golf Digest listed it in Best Places to Play in 2004.
