The East is two courses stitched together. The front nine goes back to Donald Ross and Willard G. Wilkinson in the 1930s, and a 1991 Golfweek article called it the Best Pure Classic Nine in the world, pointing to a Redan, a roller-coaster short par 5 and links-style bunkering. The 5th is the hole regulars talk about: a tree-lined par 5 that bends right, needs a carry over a deep gully and finishes at a postage-stamp green with sand in front and drop-offs behind. It's only 437 yards from the blues.
The back nine is Robert Trent Jones: 90-foot drops from tee to green, 150-yard carries over spring-fed ponds, a par-5 10th cut through tall pines and a par-3 14th played from a tee high above a small plateau green.
