Rutgers University Golf Course

Hal Purdy's 1963 layout for a club founded in 1894. Big greens, and a course where putting the drive in the right spot matters more than length.

About Rutgers University Golf Course

Rutgers runs a public 18 in Piscataway, designed by Hal Purdy and opened on May 29, 1963. The course describes itself plainly: large greens, fair whether you walk or ride, and a layout where the placement of your drive often matters more than how far it goes. The NJSGA rates it as a 3-hour-57-minute round, and the staff expect you to keep up with the group in front.

The club is much older than the course. Four men and four women founded the New Brunswick Golf Club in 1894, and it was among the first members of the USGA. Its 1897 nine had named holes (Valley, Pie-Crust, Carry-All, Goblet) and used Ross Hall, built in 1740 and once quarters for George Washington and his staff, as a clubhouse. The club bought 118 acres on River Road in 1912, went bankrupt in the Depression, and Rutgers bought it in 1935 for $15,000. Construction of the present 18 began in 1961.

The practice range is 28 bays, mats only and 300 yards long, with a practice green and chipping area, and two teaching pros give lessons. The course opens by March 15 and closes in mid-December, weather permitting, from 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and 5:30 a.m. on weekends.

It's one of 2 courses in Piscataway on Yoink, and Raritan Landing Golf Course is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
