Charleston Springs Golf Course

Two Mark Mungeam 18s side by side: a links-style North with wildflowers and native grass, and a parkland South that runs to 6,953 yards.

About Charleston Springs Golf Course

Charleston Springs is Monmouth County's 36-hole park complex, and both courses are Mark Mungeam designs, each a par 72. They feel like two different places. The North is the links-style one: wide, rolling fairways lined by native grasses and wildflowers, lots of bunkers, water in play more than once, and big greens. It rates 73.4 with a 126 slope.

The South is built in the old parkland style the county compares to courses of the teens and twenties. It follows the land that was already there, with scattered trees and native grass framing the holes. It's 6,953 yards from the back tees (73.2 rating, 125 slope), and there are four sets of tees, so move up if the tips are too much.

The park system built it with conservation and habitat restoration in mind, and there's a 2-mile walking trail on the property. For practice, the range hits off grass to six target greens, the putting green covers more than half an acre, and a 5-acre short-game area added in 2007 has two chipping greens, bunkers and an acre of fairway. You need that day's greens fee ticket to use it, or pay $12 at the pro shop.

It's one of 75 courses Yoink watches in the Northern & Central New Jersey area, and the closest alternative is Peddie Golf Club, about 6 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
