About Washoe County Golf Club
The Shoe is Washoe County's course on Foley Way, close to downtown Reno. It's a classic, walkable layout under mature trees, 6,695 yards from the back tees and 5,863 from the front, par 72. It's an easy one to carry your bag on, and the rate card has walking prices all week. The map survey counts 11 tree-lined holes, water on six and about 52 bunkers, with roughly 78 feet of elevation change across the property. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
The club traces its start to 1917, as a private nine-hole members' club, and credits Mrs. Gourtley Dunn Webb with founding it. It says that makes Washoe one of the earliest courses in the American West designed by a woman. It became a public course in 1936, after a WPA-era project in the 1930s reshaped it into the layout you play now. Sam Whiting of San Francisco's Olympic Club said at the time it could become the equal of any course he had worked on or played.
Washoe hosted its first professional tournament in 1946, and Ben Hogan is on its list of champions. It has hosted state, regional and local championships ever since, and it's still where a lot of Reno golfers learned the game.
It's one of 36 courses Yoink watches in the Reno & Tahoe area, and the closest alternative is LakeRidge Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
