About Monument Shadows Golf Course
Monument Shadows is the City of Gering's course, and the name is literal: it sits right at the base of Scotts Bluff National Monument. The oldest part of the course, holes 2 through 8, is the original nine, with wide, straight fairways lined with trees and medium-sized greens that break more than they look. The rest came later and plays differently, with mounding, bunkers and water. The 3rd runs alongside a patch of washed-out sandrock badlands that belongs to the monument, and from the 3rd fairway and the 7th tee you can look out over Scottsbluff.
The Nebraska Golf Association lists Wyss and Associates as the architect and 1976 as the first opening. From the back it's over 6,800 yards, the forward tees are just over 4,800, and two family tee sets at 3,000 and 3,900 yards make it a place to bring kids. The course calls it moderately easy to walk. Pace of play is two hours a nine and they enforce it. There's a range, a chipping green and a putting green, and the Monument Grill has a full bar and patio seating.
