About Hillside Golf Course
Hillside is Sidney's city course, set in a canyon of the Lodgepole Valley on the bluffs south of town. It opened in 1962 (per the Nebraska Golf Association), and the course says its front nine was added in 1993, using the lay of the land for its most scenic holes. The city describes it as two contrasting nines, and that's how it plays.
The round starts with a drop: you tee off from the side of a bluff to a fairway 30 feet below. The holes up on the hillsides have narrow fairways full of dips and rolls, and the ones down between the bluffs are long and narrow, hemmed in by the bases of the bluffs. The city's own warning is fair: many shots don't give you a way to recover, so pick targets and keep it in play.
It's a par 72 with five sets of tees, and it isn't short. The 12th runs 600 yards from the blues and the 5th 570. There's a driving range, a putting green and a chipping green with bunkers, and the Hillside Grill is next door for a drink after.
