About Bill Roberts Municipal Golf Course
Bill Roberts is Helena's city course, and it's been here since 1925, when it opened as a nine-holer called Last Chance, after the 1864 Last Chance gold strike that started the town. Two years later Charles Lindbergh flew the Spirit of St. Louis into Helena on a touring stop and used the golf course as his landing strip. The name changed later to honor Bill Roberts, an Illinois native who was the pro and greenskeeper from 1945 to 1965. On his watch the course got water, grass greens replaced the oiled sand ones in 1951, and he planted cottonwoods, though few of them made it.
The city opened the full 18 in 1976, with Robert Graves as architect and Tom Roe shaping the new holes, which sat alongside the original nine and their push-up greens. In 1990 Helena put just over $1 million in bonds into new tees, greens, bunkers and ponds, a new irrigation system and 360 trees, and when the work was finished in 1993 Carl Thusen was credited as the course architect.
Today it plays 6,782 yards from the tips across four sets of tees, rated 71.2 with a 123 slope from the Back Tees, with 43 bunkers and 9 water hazards.
