About Forest Park Golf Course
This is golf in the middle of Forest Park, one of the biggest urban parks in the country, a few minutes from downtown. It's three par-35 nines, Hawthorne, Dogwood and Redbud, named for St. Louis trees, and you play them in pairs, so the 18 you get depends on the day. Zoysia fairways, mature trees, undulating greens and water here and there.
The nines are not alike. Hawthorn is the flat, walkable one and the shortest at 3,047 yards. Dogwood is somewhat hilly with a water fairway, and Redbud is very hilly, the toughest of the three and, at 3,174 yards, the longest. If you want a gentle walk, ask for Hawthorn in the mix; if you want a test, Dogwood and Redbud together is the pairing.
The history runs deep. It opened in 1912 as a nine-hole course designed by Robert Foulis, a Scot who had worked at the Old Course at St Andrews, and more nines followed in 1913 and 1915. In 1929 it hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links. Between 2001 and 2004 all three courses and the clubhouse were rebuilt, a project that started with a $2 million gift from developer Norman Probstein, and the course still carries his name. Ruthie's, in the glass clubhouse, is open to anyone in the park.
