About Wildflower Golf Course

Joel Goldstrand built Wildflower with seaside golf in mind, and the result is what the course calls a Prairie Links: tall-grass prairie and rolling hills running into the lakes and woods of northwest Minnesota. Some holes are wide open, others run between oaks, and the native grass and sand are where the trouble is. The greens are big, undulating bent grass, easy enough to hit and hard to make putts on.

It's a par 72 of more than 7,000 yards from the back with five sets of tees, so pick the set that fits. The hole everyone remembers is the fifth, a long par 4 with a 90-foot drop.

It sits at Fair Hills Resort on Pelican Lake, about 15 minutes south of Detroit Lakes and 45 minutes east of Fargo-Moorhead. The range runs 350 yards and fits more than 25 players, with a chipping green under mature oaks and a putting green by the clubhouse.

From September 7 it's $40 to $50 walking. Twilight starts at 3 p.m. ($37 walking, $59 riding for 18) except on holiday weekends. Posted prices are cash: add 7.375% sales tax, plus 3% if you pay by card. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead by talking to the staff, or you may be charged.
