About Young's Golf, Recreation & Dining

Young's is a Northwoods course by Chicaugon Lake, on part of a 3,000-plus-acre estate that George and Margaret Young, who ran the Chicago Fire Brick Company and summered in Iron County, gave to the county for public use. George, an Iron County native and keen golfer, designed the course himself, and it opened in 1984. The clubhouse followed in 1993 and is dedicated to the couple. A trust they set up keeps the fees down, especially for county residents.

It's forest golf with real slope. The 7th and 13th are blind uphill par 3s to greens that tilt hard from back to front, so stay below the hole. Wagner Creek comes into play on the back nine: the 11th, the No. 1 handicap, is a sharp dogleg left with a long approach over the creek and is the only hole without a bunker, and the 12th asks whether you want to carry the trees and the creek off the tee.

There's more than golf on the property: a driving range, a pro shop, the FireBrick Bar and Grill, an aquatics center and miles of trails.
