TimberStone at Pine Mountain

Jerry Matthews routed it up Pine Mountain and back down again. The 17th, Sagola, drops 110 feet from the back tee to the green.

About TimberStone at Pine Mountain

TimberStone is the golf course at Pine Mountain Ski and Golf Resort, a Jerry Matthews design on 240 acres of the mountain's Northwoods. It's par 72 and plays from 5,060 to 6,938 yards across six sets of tees, and the tips carry a 150 slope, so pick your tee honestly.

The routing is the thing. Paul Albanese, Matthews's project architect, says the idea was to walk golfers slowly up the mountain without their noticing, then drop them down the last holes of each nine with the view opening up. Rock from the site is worked into the features. The 17th, called Sagola, is the signature: 110 vertical feet from the back tee to the green, and the resort's advice is to watch the treetops for the wind before you pull a club.

It opened in 1998, and Golf Digest named it one of the best new courses of that year. Matthews, known as the Johnny Appleseed of Michigan golf, designed nearly 100 of the state's public courses, and GolfMichigan's writer says many consider TimberStone one of his finest. The scorecard allows 2 hours 10 minutes a nine.

It's one of 15 courses Yoink watches in the Upper Peninsula area, and the closest alternative is Oak Crest Golf Course, about 8 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
