About Treetops Resort - Masterpiece Course
Masterpiece was the first course at Treetops. Robert Trent Jones Sr. walked the site in 1985 and it opened in 1987, when Golf Digest named it the No. 2 new resort course in the United States. The land sits above the Pigeon River Valley, heavily wooded and rolling, and the resort calls it its toughest course. The hole tips back that up: forced carries to elevated fairways, crowned greens that shed balls off both sides, and a par 5 of nearly 600 yards straight uphill.
The hole everyone talks about is the par-3 6th, up to 180 yards from a 120-foot perch. The story goes that when Jones and Harry Melling pulled up to that spot in 1985, Jones asked why the resort was called Sylvan, looked out over the treetops, and suggested a new name. Treetops now has five courses, with others by Tom Fazio and Rick Smith, plus Threetops, the par-3 course that hosted the ESPN Par-3 Shootout from 1999 to 2006.
