Otsego Resort - The Classic

William Diddel's parkland course and the founding course of the Gaylord Golf Mecca. The short par-4 ninth plays from one ski hill to another.

About Otsego Resort - The Classic

The Classic is the older, gentler of Otsego Resort's two courses: a traditional country-club style parkland layout by William H. Diddel, sitting above the Sturgeon River Valley about a mile from downtown Gaylord. It's only 6,348 yards from the tips, with wide fairways, but the greens are kept quick. The resort calls it the founding course of the Gaylord Golf Mecca.

The hole everyone remembers is the ninth, a 285-yard par 4 hit from the top of one ski slope to the top of another. Look back from the green and you get the same twenty-mile view you see from the main lodge.

Otsego began as a quiet alpine retreat. According to the resort, the Classic came after Alan L. Gornick, a former Ford Motor Co. general counsel, bought the property in 1955 and turned it into a four-season resort. The newer Tribute, by Rick Robbins and Gary Koch, is next door.

It's one of 52 courses Yoink watches in the Petoskey, Boyne & Gaylord area, and the closest alternative is Michaywe - The Pines Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
