About Donald Ross Memorial at The Highlands (Boyne)
The Donald Ross Memorial is a greatest-hits course: 18 holes copied from Ross designs, many of them at private clubs you'll probably never get on. BOYNE founder Everett Kircher wanted a homage to Ross, and his team, with architect Bill Newcomb and instructor Jim Flick, visited more than 50 classic Ross courses to choose holes, then matched them to the Harbor Springs ground by slope. Golf Digest named it a Best New Resort Course in the U.S. in 1990.
Since 2020 BOYNE and Michigan architect Ray Hearn have been pulling the holes closer to the originals, using CAD and Google Earth, tools they didn't have the first time. The 1st, a copy of Seminole's 6th, got sand waste areas and a green 40% bigger. The 13th copies Seminole's 15th, the 15th was rebuilt to Aronimink's restored plan, and the 16th, the course's copy of Pinehurst's 10th, got its green doubled to 8,300 square feet and reopened as a par 5 in 2023. The 8th copies the 6th at Charlotte Country Club, with a willow on the right of the green.
It's a par 72 of 6,814 yards from the Brown tees (73.9 rating, 143 slope), and it's a tree-lined, watery test: the map survey has trees along 16 holes, water near 10, 11 doglegs and about 64 bunkers.
