About Belvedere Golf Club

Belvedere is a private club that takes outside play, the way the old clubs in Scotland and Ireland do. It started in 1925, when members of the Belvedere Club, a summer cottage association between Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix, decided they wanted a course of their own. They picked the Supernaw and Hooker farms on Marion Center Road and hired William Watson, the Scot behind Olympic Club, Olympia Fields and Harding Park, and it opened in 1927.

The road splits the property, front nine on one side and back nine on the other, and a ridge runs through both. The front drops into a valley and works around a winding creek, then climbs back up at 6 and runs along the ridge to 9. The par-3 8th plays up to a skyline green. The club calls it one of the best walks in golf, and the posted rates are walking rates. Then there's the 16th, 346 yards uphill to a perched, sloping green. Walter Hagen won the 1929 Great Lakes Open here and called it the finest par 4 in America.

The greens are the thing. Watson's original drawings turned up in 2016, and they showed how much the greens had shrunk over the decades. The restoration brought back the edges, plateaus and closely mown surrounds, so you'll chip and bump as much as you putt. The Fried Egg credits consulting architect Bruce Hepner with restoring fairway lines, green sizes and playing corridors over time.

The history runs deep. Belvedere has hosted the Michigan Amateur 41 times since 1930, including every year from 1963 to 1988. Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus all played here, and Tom Watson, who spent boyhood summers nearby, is an honorary member.
