About Lakewood Shores Resort - The Gailes
The Gailes is Lakewood Shores' take on a Scottish seaside course, designed and built by Kevin Aldridge, the owner's son, and opened about three decades before the resort's 30th-anniversary celebration in 2022. Expect large double greens, winding burns, berms, sod-faced pot bunkers and long fescue. Golf Digest named it the Best New Resort Course in the United States in 1993 and Michigan's Number One Public and Resort Course in 1996.
The ground is almost dead flat, with about 5 feet of elevation change mapped across the whole course, and it's covered in sand: 141 bunkers on the map, water on 12 holes, and only three holes lined by trees. The 10th is the course's own example of how it plays: a 348-yard par 4 that looks simple, with seven deep sod-faced bunkers, knee-high fescue mounds and a burn down the left. It's par 72 and 6,954 yards from the championship tees, with 6,393, 6,073 and 5,246 below that. Before it was a golf resort, the land was Serradella Farms; Stan Aldridge bought the struggling course here in 1986 and The Gailes became the resort's second 18, after The Serradella.
