About Veterans Memorial Golf Course

Veterans Memorial is one of Springfield's two city courses, and the longer one: par 72 and 6,350 yards from the back tees, with a 69.3 rating and 121 slope on bent grass. Geoffrey S. Cornish designed it, and it opened in 1964. The other city course, Franconia, dates to 1929.

It gets real tournament golf. In 2026 it hosted a Massachusetts Amateur qualifier for the fourth year in a row, with 105 players needing a 3.6 handicap or better to enter. When it hosted a USGA Junior Amateur qualifier for the first time, the city says it was the first site in the country to sell out.

The city has been putting money in. Its two courses got about $1 million in course work, and the Veterans clubhouse, untouched since the 1960s, was renovated in 2025 with a new roof, windows, kitchen and systems, and accessible restrooms. The two courses see about 70,000 rounds a season and brought in a record $2.3 million in 2025. Adaptive golf carts are available.
