Lighthouse Sound Golf Club

About Lighthouse Sound Golf Club

Lighthouse Sound opened in 2000 on a 1,000-acre spot across the bay from Ocean City, and Arthur Hills designed it. The land was a farm until the mid-1960s. Then a development of almost 3,000 home sites was started and stopped, and the Ruark family bought the property in the late 1990s. They cut the homes back to fewer than 100, set away from the water, and left more than 700 acres of marsh and wooded wetland alone. You can still see the old silo and barn from the range.

Marsh, river or bay is part of 15 of the 18 holes. The 2nd, a 508-yard par 5, and the 3rd, a 190-yard par 3, share one 16,000-square-foot double green on the edge of the Assawoman Bay marsh, and the course says no other back-to-back holes in America do that. The 5th is the hole on the postcards: a par 3 of 89 to 218 yards straight over the marsh to a green with water on three sides and the Ocean City skyline behind it.

The back nine turns inland along the St. Martin's River, through trees and marsh, and the 11th and 12th run right along the water. Between the 8th and 9th you ride a cart bridge of nearly 1,500 feet, which the course calls the longest in the country; there are more than 2,000 feet of bridges in all, built so the wetlands didn't have to be filled. GOLF Magazine ranked it second in Maryland and put it on its Top 100 Courses You Can Play list, both in 2014.

It's one of 29 courses Yoink watches in the Delmarva Beaches — OC & Rehoboth area, and the closest alternative is Ocean Pines Golf Club, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
