Glen Riddle Golf Club (Man O' War)

About Glen Riddle Golf Club (Man O' War)

Man O'War is the daily-fee 18 at GlenRiddle; the other course, War Admiral, is for members. The club sells it as pure links golf, and it plays like it: big greens, double fairways, pot bunkers, sand dunes and the Eastern Shore wind that never really stops. It's 7,196 yards and par 72 from the Black tees (75.1 rating, 138 slope), but the Red tees come down to 4,875, so there's a set for most games.

The land is the story. This was Riddle Farm, which raised Man O' War, War Admiral and Seabiscuit, and the old racetrack used to train those horses now crosses three holes as a hazard. The clubhouse was the farm's main stable. The owners saved the beam and timber frame over the dining room and the original stall doors, some of which are now tabletops in the bar, and there's a museum hall on the horses, including the 1938 War Admiral and Seabiscuit match race at Pimlico. The horseshoe arch outside copies the Man O' War Memorial the farm built in 1952.

Ruark Golf owns and runs the club, and a Ruth's Chris Steak House shares the clubhouse. The scorecard credits Joel Weiman of McDonald Design Group, and Ruark also lists Jim Furyk under course architect. The course is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System.

It's one of 5 courses in Berlin on Yoink, and Glen Riddle Golf Club (War Admiral) is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
