About Thousand Acres Golf Club
Thousand Acres sits on the quiet side of Deep Creek Lake, Maryland's largest freshwater lake at 3,900 acres, with the Appalachian ridges of Western Maryland around it. Craig Schreiner designed it and Bob Holcomb shaped it, and the club says they built the bunkers, green surrounds, sight lines and tees out of the ground that was already there. It's par 72 and goes from 7,211 yards (74.1 rating, 135 slope) at the Black tees down to 5,103 at the Red, with four more sets in between, so pick honestly.
It's a course in two parts. The front nine opened first, in the early 2000s according to a May 2025 GolfCrusade trip report, and the club's own hole guide still calls the back the new back 9. The same writers describe the back as a figure-eight that crosses at the 11th and 17th tees. Schreiner's own project notes say each nine was meant to have a different feel, with the lake views as the payoff.
The property holds the largest wetlands around Deep Creek, and the club says the course is deeded as green space forever. Expect wildlife: hawks, geese, deer, and the odd black bear.
