About Lodestone Golf Course

Lodestone is a big mountain course: par 72 and 7,507 yards from the back tees, with bentgrass fairways and undulating greens. It sits on a ridge above Deep Creek Lake, about 3,000 feet up, and the holes are cut through thick woods and around big rock outcrops. The map survey has trees along all 18 holes, about 70 bunkers, no water in play and roughly 217 feet between the high and low points. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The hole people talk about is the 17th, a par 3 of about 214 yards over a big gully to a sloped green with a rock cliff in front. The downhill par-5 13th is the other one the resort points to, and the short par-4 14th has two bunkers sitting in the middle of the fairway.

Wisp Resort launched it with Hale Irwin in 2006 as Maryland's first Hale Irwin Signature course, with architect Todd Schoeder working the 400-plus acres on Marsh Mountain. It was sold at first as a private course with homesites, and ground was broken in June 2007. It's open to the public now, and Golfweek ranked it Maryland's second-best public course in 2012, 2013 and 2014, according to MarylandGolf.com.

It's one of 10 courses Yoink watches in the Deep Creek, Snowshoe & the WV Highlands area, and the closest alternative is Fantasy Valley Golf Course, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
