About Riverside Municipal Golf Course

Riverside is Portland's own course, owned and run by the city, on rolling ground with tree-lined fairways along the Presumpscot River. The main event is the North Course, a par 72 that plays 6,430 yards from the black tees (70.3 rating, 123 slope) and 4,044 from the forward gold tees. It isn't long by modern standards, so the test is keeping it between the trees. The scorecard sets a pace of just under four hours. There's also the nine-hole South Course, a par 35 that opened in 1969, and a three-hole practice loop built in 2007 for junior programs.

The history runs deep for a muni. Wayne Stiles is the architect on the scorecard. The city opened nine holes in July 1932, when a round cost 50 cents, and Works Progress Administration money took it to 18 in 1937. From 1938 to 2010 it hosted 42 Maine Opens, the most of any course in Maine. In winter the course turns into a park for cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing.

It's one of 65 courses Yoink watches in the Northern New England area, and the closest alternative is Spring Meadows Golf Club, about 7 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
