The Wetlands Golf Course

Frank Burandt's 2006 layout with water in play on 11 holes, native grasses at the edges, and 9 and 18 finishing on a shared double green by the clubhouse.

About The Wetlands Golf Course

The Wetlands is the newest of Lafayette's three city courses, and the name is honest. Frank Burandt built it to show off the area's lakes and wetland ground, and water comes into play on 11 of the 18 holes. The fairways are wide and the land rolls gently, so trouble is more about the ponds and the well-bunkered greens than tight tree lines. Native grasses and wildflowers fill in the spaces between holes.

The finish is the part people remember: the 9th and 18th both come home to one big double green in front of the clubhouse, and the wind is a factor on both. Five sets of tees run from just over 5,000 yards to 7,300, so it can be a stroll or a real test depending on where you tee it up. The greens are TifDwarf and roll smooth.

It opened in April 2006 and is Lafayette's stop on Louisiana's Audubon Golf Trail. The city runs it as a busy tournament course, about 25 events a year including the Lafayette City Championship and high school state events. There's a driving range, a full pro shop, a restaurant, and lessons and clinics for juniors and adults.

It's one of 2 courses in Lafayette on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Jay and Lionel Hebert Municipal Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
